Introduction to genealogy to be held at Keystone Villa

“Who Do You Think You Are,” an introduction to genealogy sponsored by the Friends of the Fleetwood Area Public Library, will be held Wednesday from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the community room of Keystone Villa, 501 Hoch Road, Blandon.

The featured speaker, Charleen Stehman, a librarian at the Berks Genealogical Society, will explain the basics of researching family history with Berks County resources.

The program is free, but registration is requested by calling the Fleetwood Area Public Library at 610-944-0146.

• The 7th Masonic District is hosting an open house Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Reading Masonic Center, 300 S. Seventh Ave., West Reading. The event will feature tours of the building and information on Freemasons’ history, mission and work in the community. Continental breakfast will be served.

• Carol Gardecki will discuss the Constitution Wednesday and May 23 at the West Lawn-Wyomissing Hills Library, 101 Woodside Ave., West Lawn.

The free seminar begins each night at 7 p.m.

The discussions are based on the book “The 5000 Year Leap: 28 Great Ideas That Changed the World” by W. Cleon Skousen.

• The fourth annual Run for Corey, a 5K run and 1-mile walk event, will be held May 20 at Alsace Township Playground in Alsace Manor.

Registration is at 8 a.m. The run will begin at 9, followed by the walk at 9:40.

The fee is $25 for the run and $20 for the walk. Participants will receive a T-shirt.

The event is organized by the township recreation board. For more information, call 610-929-5324.

• The Sew-N-Sew Club of Reading and Allentown is celebrating 41 years of helping its communities. The club is presenting its scholarship fashion show and banquet on May 20 at the Riveredge along Route 183 in Greenfields.

The theme is “Ultimate Fashions on the Runway.”

Doors open at 3 p.m., dinner starts at 4 and the show is at 5.

Tickets must be purchased by May 13.

The cost is $20 for those age 12 and under and $45 for all others.

• Red Lobster has donated restaurant tables, chairs, booths, bar stools, light fixtures, decorations and other items to the Habitat for Humanity Berks ReStore, 5370 Allentown Pike, Muhlenberg Township.

The furnishings and items will be available for resale to the public today.

Red Lobster is making the donation here and in other areas because it is remodeling many of its locations.

• Weis Markets has launched its annual Weis Paws for Pets program and is asking customers to donate money, pet food and supplies in May to aid local animal shelters and rescue organizations.

In Berks County, organizations to benefit from the program are the Animal Rescue League of Berks County, Cumru Township; the Humane Society of Berks County, Reading; One by One Cat Rescue, Kutztown; and First State Greyhound Rescue Inc., Blandon.

A new option this year allows customers to make donations when they purchase vouchers of $1, $3 or $5, or Paws for Pets bracelets for $1.

The Cass County Genealogical Society will be meeting Tuesday, May 8, at 6:30 p.m. at Horne Enterprise Building in Atlanta.

The speaker will be the vice-president of CCGS, Bob Rutledge. He will be speaking about his ancestors who lived in the Carolinas. John Rutledge ran against George Washington in the first race for President of the United States. Mr. Rutledge also signed the U.S. Declaration of Independence.

Question by Kally: What exactly does “family history” mean when a doctor asks you that?
LIke they wanted to know if a specific condition runs in my family. Do they only want to know about my parents, brothers and sisters? Or do they want beyond that? Like my aunt from my moms side had it, and my dad’s Cousin had it too but not sure if that’s not what they wanna know. Help?

the doctor wants to know about all family beyond just parents and siblings and so forth. want to know what all family members have had because then they may beable to find out if it is something you may have or get medical wise
