Aboriginal historian and author David D Plains new book “The Plains of Aamjiwnaang” (published by Trafford Publishing) is a sweeping history of the Chippewa of the Aamjiwnaang territory and their interactions with Europeans, focusing on four successive chiefs from 1685 to 1850.
“The Plains of Aamjiwnaang” contains native history never before collected into one source. It details native involvement in many well-known historical events, such as the French and Indian War, the American Revolution and the War of 1812. It also describes significant events such as Ojibwa conflicts like the Sauk War and the Iroquois War.
An excerpt from “The Plains of Aamjiwnaang”:
“The Miami War Chief, Little Turtle had forged a confederacy that included the war chiefs and warriors of the Miami, Potawatomi, Shawnee and Ahnishenahbek [Ojibwa]. Little Thunder was the pre-eminent war chief of the Ahnishenahbek and his two sons, Red Sky and Anchau were young warriors at this time. Many skirmishes that ensued during the 1780s led to decisions by Washington that would at first prove disastrous for the Big Knifes [Americans].”
A history book written in academic style, the citations and footnotes in “The Plains of Aamjiwnaang” make it perfect for use as a textbook for high school or college native studies courses.
